My aunt had to worry about this when my cousin turned 18. She is only mildly-autistic, and she is very high functioning. Because of that, my aunt didn't know if it made sense to keep custody of her. At the same time though, she was very innocent and couldn't see when people were taking advantage of her. She also had to be reminded to do common things like shower or clean up after herself, because she would just get distracted all day, or all week, and forget to do it. Eventually my aunt ended up taking custody of her past her eighteenth birthday, and everything was a lot better for my cousin. Hopefully other people will be able to find out what works best for them in these situations.
