Attention Registered Ministries...

Hello,

The Bureau of Child Care has learned two important new updates on the national criminal history check process that impact registered ministries.

 1. Registered Ministry staff and volunteers will be able to receive a $15 discount on the cost of national criminal background checks.

• The Indiana State Police is waiving their portion of the total cost for registered ministries.
• This discount will be accessed by entering your Registered Ministry facility number into the appropriate space on the L-1 enrollment screen.
• This discount is not yet available but is coming soon.

2. Registered Ministries should wait until after this functionality is added to the L-1 system so that you can receive the discounted rate.  It is anticipated that the discount will be available the week of July 12.

• Remember that the law allows for time to get all of your national criminal background checks completed so waiting until the discount is available will not result in a noncompliance with the new criminal background check law.

3. If your registered ministry receives CCDF funding, the requirement to meet the new CCDF eligibility standards under SEA305 will not be impacted by your waiting for the discount to complete the national background checks. These new standards are still effective July 1, 2013.

Friday, August 2, 2013: Peter Mangione-Co-Director of WestEd's Center for Child and Family Studies.  Dr. Mangione provides leadership in the development of comprehensive training resources for infant and toddler caregivers and the evaluation of early childhood programs and services. His contributions have helped make the Program for Infant/Toddler Care a national model for training early childhood practitioners.

What does this mean?

If you are a member of the Resource Library or want to become a member, email vanessaf@childcareanswers.com 72 hours in advance of the time you want to visit.

3. Arrive at the library at confirmed time to check out/in classroom kits, laminate materials, check out professional development resources & much more!

Start preparing for your CDA- Changes effective June 1st!!

1) Visit the Council's online bookstore and Purchase the new Competency Standards book for your setting and learn more about the new CDA 2.0 process- www.cdacouncil.org


2) Find a Professional Development (PD) Specialist on the Council website and Submit your application.

3) Upon receiving approval of your application, you will receive a "Ready to Schedule Notice" to schedule your Verification Visit.

4) Schedule to take the CDA Exam at a Pearson VUE testing center.

Once you have completed all steps in the credentialing process, you can earn your CDA credential much quicker and with more efficiency to become a member of the national CDA Community.

Talking with Your Child About Natural Disasters

Media, school and adult conversations. What do these items have in common? All of these sources are opportunities for your child to hear and/or learn about disasters. The stories your child hears may prompt worry and questions. Are you prepared to handle these concerns and questions? Here are some tips on how you can help your children cope with such emotions.


Maintain your routine. Routines are very important to children. Keeping a regular schedule, especially when the world seems unpredictable, gives your child a sense of reassurance. Comfort lets him know he is safe. Make sure your child gets appropriate sleep, exercise and nutrition.

Avoid too much news media coverage. When a tragic event happens, we can count on the media picking up the story. Keep in mind, media images can be graphic. If your child is watching television, she may have mixed reactions about the things she is seeing. Depending on the age of your child, she may not have the understanding of time and space yet. As a result, she may assume that what she is seeing on the television is close to home. This may cause the fear that a disaster will hit in your neighborhood.

Answer questions. Children are most afraid when they do not understand what is happening around them. Make sure when you are answering your child's questions, you are calm and respond at their developmental level. Your preschooler's thinking is literal and self-centered. Keep your answers simple and on a “need to know” basis. Too much or too many details may only cause him to be more afraid or concerned. Your school-age child can be given a more detailed response. You may sit down with him to explain what happens during an earthquake or a flood.

Get children involved in the effort. If your child feels like she wants to help those in need, let her. Find a local, or even national, organization or charity that is working to help those affected by the tragedy. This will show your child how people around the world are working together to help those in need. Ask your child what she would like to do. There are many things your child can do to be part of the relief efforts.
