October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Awareness Month. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, is the sudden unexplained death of a child less than one year of age. In many instances of SIDS, a child is thought to be sleeping, but when checked is found dead. The precise cause is unknown, but the 40 hour Child Care Aware Training Academy Child Care Essentials course can help you can identify risk factors. As part of the Safe to Sleep campaign (formerly the Back to Sleep campaign), the National Institute of Child Health and Development offers a free, downloadable publication, Safe Sleep for Your Baby- https://www.nichd.nih.gov/publications/pubs_details.cfm?from=&pubs_id=5794. The brochure explains ways parents and caregivers can reduce the risks of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related causes of infant death and provide a safe sleep environment for infants.


On October, 30, Betty McEntire with the American SIDS Institute and Shelly Blecha, Child Care Aware of America® parent leader, will host a free webinar discussing safe sleep practices, SIDS and prevention. Indiana Food Protection Training

Save the date for a unique training opportunity sponsored by Indiana Food Protection

FD 112 Food Code, will be held in Indianapolis May 10, 11, and 12, 2011.

This introductory course will consist of training on the Food Code and the public health rationale for Code provisions to prepare regulators for application of the Food Code to “retail” food establishments. Topics include management’s duties and responsibilities, employee health, food equipment, water, plumbing, waste, physical facilities, poisonous/toxic material compliance and enforcement.

FDA courses, taught by FDA trainers, are tuition free and are open on a national basis. Indiana’s course will be open to Industry, Regulatory, and Academia. This course awards 2 CEU’s and attendees will be awarded a certificate for completion of the course. Attendees must attend the entire course, participate in all class activities, and complete the assessments tool(s) (exercises) that measure the participant’s attainment of course objectives.

Registration information will come from Indiana Food Protection in March.

The A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute is pleased to offer this workshop opportunity for early childhood educators and child care providers. Learn to create and sustain bias-free child care environments that encourage children to appreciate diversity and live, work, and play together!

Participants who complete both workshops will receive 1 CEU or 10 in service hours, and all participants will receive free anti-bias resources to use in the classroom.

Indy Chapter of IAEYC hosts trainings on the Foundations

Come and join in this fun, hands on learning opportunity with the Foundations to the Indiana Academic Standards from birth to age 5.

· Participants will observe and participate in activities that support the Foundations.
· Participants will take home new ideas while earning .25 CEU’s per session.
· There will be 5 sessions held at Ivy Tech Community College ~ Fourth Floor Auditorium, 50 W. Fall Creek Pkwy. N. Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46208.
· Admission Fee: $10 per session, or $40.00 if paying for all 5 sessions in advance.
· Copies of the Foundations will be given out at the Orientation on January 31st.
